
In collaboration with Dr. Amrita Cheema’s lab at Georgetown University, NSL co-authored a new study published in iScience examining how high-dose neutron radiation — the kind of exposure expected in a nuclear disaster — affects survival and organ injury over a full year in an animal model. The study found neutron radiation to be significantly more damaging than equivalent X-ray doses to the gastrointestinal and blood-forming systems in the short term, and to the lungs and kidneys over the long term, with urine-based protein and metabolite signatures tracking the timing and severity of injury.
