Radiation-Induced Metabolic Signatures in Nonhuman Primates (2024)

Scientific Challenge: Reliable biomarkers are needed to identify individuals at highest risk of mortality  following acute radiation exposure and to improve medical triage after radiological or nuclear incidents.

Study Type: Radiation Metabolomics | Nonhuman Primate Model

Our Contribution: Nelson Scientific Labs performed longitudinal plasma metabolomic profiling using UPLC-QTOF mass spectrometry to characterize metabolic alterations in rhesus nonhuman primates following lethal total-body irradiation and identify molecular signatures associated with the preterminal stage.

Key Findings: Radiation exposure induced significant time-dependent disruptions in glycerophospholipid metabolism and steroid hormone biosynthesis, revealing metabolic signatures associated with progression toward lethality.

Research Impact: These findings advance the development of metabolomic biomarkers for radiation injury severity and support improved triage strategies during mass casualty radiological events.
