Radiation-Induced Heart Disease: Partial vs. Whole-Heart Irradiation (2023)

Challenge: Radiation therapy for thoracic cancers can unintentionally expose cardiac tissue, increasing the risk of long-term heart damage. It remains unclear whether partial-heart irradiation produces localized or systemic cardiac effects.

Study Type: Metabolomics

Our Contribution: Nelson Scientific Labs performed LC- MS metabolomics on plasma samples from mouse models exposed to whole-heart or partial-heart irradiation. We integrated metabolomic profiles with histological and molecular cardiac endpoints to evaluate dose distribution effects.

Key Findings: Metabolomic differences between groups were subtle, while long-term tissue analyses showed no clear spatial restriction of damage within the heart. TLR4 upregulation was observed only following whole-heart irradiation, suggesting broader systemic effects in more severe exposure conditions.

Research Impact: These findings improve understanding of radiation-induced cardiac injury and suggest that partial-heart irradiation may still lead to systemic remodeling effects. The results support improved radiotherapy planning and cardiac protection strategies.
